PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carrier bead pickoff device which is compact, can be reduced in cost, and picks off the carrier bead on an image-carrying surface. SOLUTION: The carrier bead pickoff device 150 includes an elongate stationary core 162 having a first elongate segment 164, and a second elongate segment 166 consisting of a primary magnetic member 180 for generating a magnetic field within a pickoff region Rp; a rotatable, non-ferromagnetic cylindrical shell 160 mounted co-axially over the stationary core 162; and an elongate ferromagnetic strip 152 formed over a portion of the outer surface of the shell. The ferromagnetic strip is temporarily magnetized and holds the ferromagnetic carrier bead by coming into contact therewith at the time of rotating by passing through the magnetic field within the pickoff region.
