PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo image processing method properly correcting colors without being affected by color failure while not relying on a threshold value for eliminating high saturation pixels by rules of thumb and an LATD exposure system which should take into account a weighting condition. SOLUTION: The photo image processing method generates a density histogram by each RGB color component from color image data read by an imaging element, shifts the density histograms of other colors respectively in a density axis direction on the basis of the density histogram of a particular color, and then compands the density histograms of the other colors on the basis of the minimum density value in the density axis direction, respectively calculates and works out the superimposed area of the density histogram by a combination of two color components after the companding processing, and applies conversion processing to the color component of each pixel of the color image data on the basis of a shift amount and a companding rate at which the total sum of the respectively obtained superimposed areas is maximized.
