PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method of an ash melting furnace and a method of estimating a residual volume of refractory, capable of calculating a correct residual volume of the refractory, improving reliability and reducing running costs. SOLUTION: This operating method of the ash melting furnace for melting ash such as incinerated ash and fly ash in the ash melting furnace having a refractory-lined furnace inner wall, comprises an operation data collecting step (S1) for collecting the operation data of the ash melting furnace, a residual volume estimating step (S2) for estimating the residual volume of the refractory on the basis of the operation data, an operating condition step (S3) for guiding the residual volume of the refractory and operating conditions, and a step (S4) for operating the ash melting furnace on the basis of the operating conditions.
