PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing material suitable for absorbing a shock applied to the heel of an occupant at the front seat of an automobile. SOLUTION: In this shock absorbing material, one side of a flat plate 11 is used as a shock receiving surface 11a, a plurality of ribs 15 made of hard closed cell bodies are buried substantially parallel to one another in a back side 11b opposite to the shock receiving surface 11a and projecting from the back side 11b of the flat plate 11 at forward end sides 15b of the ribs 15, a total compression deformation amount at the time of absorbing a shock with an energy amount of 27 J from the shock receiving surface 11a side of the flat plate 11 is 15 to 23 mm, and a reaction force is 2,500 N or less.
