ADVANCED CURRENT CONTROL METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR A MOTOR DRIVE SYSTEM

An apparatus controls a power converter (115) of an AC motor drive system (100), the power converter (115) outputting multi-phase AC current to an AC motor (110). The apparatus comprises: a state selecting unit (160); and an advanced controller (300). The state selecting unit selects an operation mode, from among a plurality of operation modes, for the AC motor (110) based on system real-time operating conditions, the plurality of operation modes including a normal mode, a power interruption mode, a fault protection mode, and a power­up/down dynamic mode. The system operating conditions include DC voltage available to the power converter (115), motor load condition, and motor speed command. The advanced controller (300) controls multi-phase AC current output from the power converter (115) to the motor (110) in accordance with the operation mode selected by the state selecting unit (160). The advanced controller (300) generates a current control reference value that is based on the selected operation mode to achieve current control under various operating conditions of the motor drive system (100).
