Propulsion machinery for a submarine includes a low speed unit comprising a fuel cell plant driven by hydrogen and oxygen and a high speed unit comprising a thermal power plant utilizing water vapour as the working medium, which water vapour is formed at least partly by combination of oxygen and hydrogen. The numeral 1 designates a fuel cell battery, driven by hydrogen and oxygen and generating electrical energy which via cables 2 is fed to a D.C. motor 3 which directly drives a propeller shaft 4 of a submarine. The propulsion machinery also comprises a turbine 5 which is connected to the propeller shaft 4 through a gear 6 and a clutch 7. When the clutch 7 is engaged the turbine 5 and electric motor 3 simultaneously drive the propeller shaft 4. The fuel cell plant and the turbine have common tanks 8 and 9 one of which contains liquid hydrogen and the other liquid oxygen for controlling the combustion temperature in the combustion chamber 25 water is fed through a conduit 34 from the reaction water tank 32. |
