PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium with high surface recording density by reducing a cross track erasure between recording tracks in spite of high track density. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium in which a recording layer of high coercive force is formed on a non-magnetic substrate with a flat surface, the medium is rotated on a spindle at a constant speed, and the surface of the magnetic recording medium is irradiated with a laser of a spot size of≤500 nm to be locally annealed. After stopping laser irradiation, a film in an annealed area is changed in structure to deteriorate coercive force. Many data tracks formed by laser irradiation in this way are formed concentrically. The width of one data track can be narrowed down to the width of a high temperature part within a laser irradiation area, and an adjacent data track is magnetically separated from the data track to be able to form a discrete track, so that a cross track erasure at recording can be reduced.
