摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process with which high selectivity for a carboxylic acid is afforded at a high aldehyde conversion rate when a straight chain or aβ-alkyl branched aliphatic carboxylic acid is prepared by oxidizing an aldehyde with oxygen. SOLUTION: The process for preparing the straight chain or theβ-alkyl branched aliphatic carboxylic acid comprises oxidizing the aldehyde with the oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas mixture. In the method, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal carboxylate or a mixture thereof in an amount of 1 mmol to 10 mmol based on 1 mol of the aldehyde used (expressed in terms of the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal) and a metal of groups 5-11 of the periodic table of elements in an amount of the maximum 5.0 ppm based on the aldehyde used or a compound of the metal and/or a mixture of the metal and/or the compound of the metal in the corresponding amount are made to exist as a catalyst.
