The procedure involves cutting of a thread by means of a cutting tool (20) with a cutting edge, which is placed opposite at number of positions in the work piece. The cutting tool is displaced in radial direction as well as axial direction and whereby the cutting edge (25) cuts at each placement point in axial direction till the next thread flank (14). An independent claim is also included for the cutting tool to manufacture the screw thread with a cut.
