<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective coating capable of using on various substrates such as a substrate containing silicon which has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than silicon carbide. <P>SOLUTION: This coating substantially contains only a specified equilibrium phase and has substantially the same CTE with that of the substrate 20 on which the coating is applied.
