PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multipoint automatic focusing apparatus, wherein the amount of movement of a focusing lens group due to misdetection can be reduced as much as possible, by reducing the errors in multipoint focus detection that has intersecting focus detection areas. SOLUTION: A focus detection device pupil-divides a subject luminous flux passed through a photographic lens and a preset detection area and projects a pair of subject images onto areas of different sensor lines, then converting the pair of subject images projected on the sensor lines into electrical image signals, thereby obtaining the amount of defocusing from the phase difference of the converted electrical image signals. The focus detection device includes the intersection detection areas VCC and HCC where the detection areas partly overlap, and the sensor lines IVCC and IHCC corresponding to the intersection detection areas VCC and HCC. Among the amounts of defocusing obtained by the vertical sensors IVCC and horizontal sensors IHCC for the intersection detection areas VCC and HCC, the amounts of defocusing whose absolute value is smaller are selected.
