PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head in which erasure of information without intention at non-recording time can be suppressed. SOLUTION: In the thin film magnetic head, a main magnetic pole layer 10 is constituted so that the front main magnetic pole layer part 10A which is extended to a position P1 in the rear from an air bearing surface 40, while which includes a tip part 10A1 having fixed width W1 prescribing recording track width of a recording medium, and the rear magnetic pole layer part 10B which is separated from the front main magnetic pole layer part 10A by being extended to the rear from a position P2 retreated more than the position P1, while which has larger width W4 more than the fixed width W1 of the tip part 10A1 out of the front main magnetic pole layer part 10A are included. Magnetic section structure of the front main magnetic pole lager part 10A is made appropriate so that needless magnetic fluxes are hard to leak at non-recording time based on shape magnetic anisotropy of the front main magnetic pole layer part 10A.
