<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the initial sequence time in a black-and-white/color image compatible device by forming images at the speed of the black-and-white mode, other than controlling to correct the image in the initial sequence. <P>SOLUTION: This black-and-white/color image compatible device which has charging means 10M, 10C, 10Y, 10K, development units 12M, 12C, 12Y, 12K, exposure means 11M, 11C, 11Y, 11K, and transfer means 13M, 13C, 13Y, 13K and which operates faster in the black-and-white mode than in the color mode. The device shortens the control sequence after the power is turned on or the operating time of the control sequence, after the door is opened or closed and normally, formes images at the speed of the black-and-white mode.
