RECORDING MEDIUM AND STORAGE AREA CHANGING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium which has a storage means which is divided into a plurality of storage areas and automatically switches a storage area when the remainder of an active area becomes small so as to use a large-capacity recording medium in a conventional recording-and-reproducing device.

SOLUTION: A readable and writable recording medium 100, which is connected to an external recording-and-reproducing device to use, is provided with; a storage means 160 having a plurality of storage areas; a controller 120 which controls the storage means 160 based on instructions from the recording-and-reproducing device; an active area designation register 140 which designates an active area from the plurality of storage areas; and an active area changing means 150 which switches an active area if the remainder of the active area is at a preliminarily fixed threshold value or less. By this, the recording medium can control the switching of the storage areas.
