Method, agent and apparatus for preparing a vessel, e.g., a human artery, for crossing of an occlusion situated therein. The method includes inducing angiogenesis in the occlusion, as by delivering an angiogenic agent to the occlusion site. Angiogenesis within the occlusion facilitates crossing by a guidewire during, e.g., angioplasty.
