The reactor (1) chamber is ellipsoidal or cylindrical. The reactor (1) outer casing has enlarged external surface area for heat dissipation. In curved sections of the ion return tubes, solenoids produce a constant magnetic field (B) with vertical field lines. The ion injectors (2) produce ion beams continuously, with a concentration of n = 108> ions cm-3> to 1010> ions cm-3> and a productivity of nt = 1018> ions s-1> to 1020> ions s-1>. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of causing collisions between opposed ion beams.
