Aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol for spinning fibres are prepared by wetting particulate polyvinyl alcohol with water at 0-50 DEG C. and dissolving the thereby swollen particles of the alcohol in hot water in two stages, the first stage being carried out at atmospheric pressure and the second at a pressure above atmospheric pressure. The first stage may be carried out at 70 DEG C. A small proportion of a higher aliphatic alcohol, benzyl alcohol, ethylene hexyl alcohol, tributyl phosphate or of a silicone resin may be added to the solution to facilitate the de-aeration of the solution and as an antifoaming agent.
