<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which judges whether the discharge lamp is of hot start or cold start, and performs a start suitable for each of them. <P>SOLUTION: The short-arc type discharge lamp lighting device is composed of the short-arc type discharge lamp 10 and a power supply device 20 supplying direct current at the start of lighting and supplying alternating current afterwards. The direct current supplied from the power supply device 20 to the discharge lamp 10 in the beginning is a current (I1) smaller than a rated current, and gets into a current (I2) larger than the rated current afterwards. The power supply device 20 detects whether a lighting state of the discharge lamp 10 is of hot start or cold start, and controls the value of the current (I2) and/or a power supply period in accordance with each lighting state, depending on the result of the detection. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
