The invention relates to a direct-injection diesel engine (1) comprising a fuel injector (24) that is designed to spray fuel against a lateral surface (10) of a combustion chamber (8) provided in a piston (4), namely by spraying a first jet of fuel (40) which is oriented towards an inside recess (30) and a second jet of fuel (42) which is oriented towards an inter-recess section (34). According to the invention, the aforementioned surface (10) is designed to receive the first jet (40) up to a height Z1 and the second jet (42) up to a height Z2, height Z1 being strictly less than height Z2. The invention also relates to an injection method implemented by one such engine.
