An insulating sleeve is applied to a socket terminal by shaping part of the sleeve to fit the socket contact end of the terminal, inserting the terminal into the sleeve and crimping another portion of the sleeve about the other end of the terminal and the adjacent end of a connecting wire. An insulating sleeve 2 is fed through a shoot (not shown) on to a working surface 1, delivered against a stop plate 4 by a cross-slide 3 and moved to a set of dies 9, 10, 11, 13 14, located at 6, by a feed finger 5 having a tip 7 to fit within the sleeve 2 which abuts a shoulder 8. Fixed die 9 and movable die 10 co-operate to shape a portion 17 of sleeve 2 to fit the end 18 of a terminal 19, which is previously crimped on to a wire 23 at 21; terminal 19 being inserted into sleeve 2 after the shaping of portion 17 and when die 10 has been withdrawn. Dies 13 and 14 are then moved by a common head 20 to co-operate with fixed die 11 to crimp the sleeve 2 about connector part 21 and the insulation support 24 of terminal 19-and the adjacent end of wire 23. The feed finger 5 is then retracted, the head 20 raised and the covered terminal removed. |
