PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an image forming apparatus, which has a copy function basically and may expand at least a facsimile function, and to perform a call request again even if the direct transmission of facsimile fails. SOLUTION: When an original is set on an original platen, required information such as a facsimile transmission opposite party is inputted by an operation display unit 5 and a start key is pressed, call origination from an NCU 9 is started. A response from an opposite party machine within a fixed time or detection of busy tones is awaited. If there is the response from the opposite party machine within the fixed time, transmission processing is performed. If the busy tones are detected, or after a fixed time passes, a call failure is determined. In such a case, whether a call can be originated again is previously selected and set by a selection switch or the like. If it is set that a call can be originated again, a scanner use flag is set, and a call re-origination standby state is then started while keeping the original on the original platen as it is. If it is set that a call can not be originated again, transmission is interrupted or read into a memory and after switching to memory transmission, the original is removed.
