PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of molding an optical element by which variance in the outside diameter of mass produced optical elements is prevented and the stable shape accuracy is improved as a result by controlling pressing speed and deformation amount in a pressing step for an optical element material. SOLUTION: A test forming of the optical element material with a 1st molding apparatus of a pressure control system is carried out (S1) to collect data of the pressing speed and the deformation amount of the optical element material (S2). A temporary forming condition is set based on data of the pressing speed and the deformation amount of the optical element material collected when the variance in the outside diameter of the optical elements press molded by the 1st molding apparatus is small, and on the basis of the set temporary molding condition, a test molding is carried out with a 2nd molding apparatus capable of controlling the pressing speed and the deformation amount of the optical element material (S3). Data in the temporary molding condition is arranged (S4) then an optimal molding condition is found (S5) and the optical element is molded with the 2nd molding apparatus based on the optimal molding condition.
