PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which a clearance of a predetermined size is formed between a thermal head and a platen roller after printing ends without the thermal head collided against the platen roller even when a recording paper comes out from between the thermal head in a head down state and the platen roller after printing ends. SOLUTION: The thermal printer 1 is equipped with the recording paper 8 of a predetermined thickness, and the thermal head 4 which can press the recording paper 8 into contact with the platen roller 3. A stopper part 6 as a collision preventing mechanism is set. The stopper part 6 prevents the thermal head 4 turned down from colliding against the platen roller 3 at the time when the thermal head 4 is turned down and a rear end 8b of the recording paper 8 after image printing comes out from between the thermal head 4 in the head down state and the platen roller 3.
