PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device, improved in the cooling effect of an organic EL element, and the cooling method of the organic EL device. SOLUTION: The endothermic side electrode of Peltier element 4 or an upper electrode 13 is in contact with the organic EL element 3, whereby heat generated in the organic EL element 3 can directly be absorbed by the upper electrode 13. The Peltier element 4 can cool directly the organic EL element 3, resulting in obtaining very high cooling effect. On the other hand, the endothermic side electrode of Peltier element 4 or a lower electrode 11 is in contact with a substrate 2, whereby heat transferred to the lower electrode 11 is dissipated smoothly through the substrate 2. Accordingly, the transfer of heat from heat absorption to heat dissipation will not be stagnated whereby efficient cooling is permitted. In this case, heat dissipation can also be more promoted by constituting the substrate 2 by a material, high in heat conductivity such as silicon, metal or the like for example.
