PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk player not detecting the disk as defective at the detection when the exact detection of a defect of optical disk is carried out and a signal component of the information recorded on the optical disk is satisfactorily being obtained even though a surface of the optical disk is stained or scratched. SOLUTION: This player consists of a reference signal producing circuit section 42 for producing a reference signal such as larger than a minimum signal and smaller than a maximum signal among signals by return lights from recording marks of a defective area, and a discriminating circuit section 43 for comparing the signal obtained from the recording mark on the defective area with the reference signal to determine that the playback is possible when the signal of the return light from the recording mark of the defective area is larger than the reference signal, while the playback is impossible when it is smaller than the reference signal.
