PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector by which an operation state is securely grasped, an operation state monitoring method, an operation state monitoring program and a recording medium on which the program is recorded. SOLUTION: The projector includes a device main body for forming an optical image and a control means 5 for controlling the device main body, the control means 5 including a processing unit 51 used to perform predetermined programs at the start of the projector and during the operation of it, and controlling the device main body. The processing unit 51 comprises: a start processing means 511 for performing a device state determination process for determining the state of the device main body at its start and for performing a start setting process for the control means; a start process restricting means 512 for restricting the start setting process for a part that is in an abnormal state, detected by the device state determination process; a drive control means 513 for controlling the device main body during the operation; a state monitoring means 514 for monitoring the operation state of the drive control means 513; a re-start processing means 515 for performing the start setting process upon the detection of an abnormal state by the state monitoring means 514; and a determination process interrupting means 516 for interrupting the device state determination process during the re-start process.
