The present invention provides a method to facilitate the production of a transgenic organism, in particular a transgenic avian. In particular, it relates to methods of determining the suitability and efficacy of vectors and nucleic acid constructs for the transduction of animal tissues and subsequent expression of any heterologous proteins encoded by the exogenous DNA. The methods of the invention provide an in vitro screening test to allow the evaluation of a vector to assess whether a construct may be expressed by the cells of the transgenic animal. The present invention is, in particular, useful for assessing the utility of a vector in transforming avian oviduct cells, with these cells being essential mediators of oviduct-specific expression of a protein in a transgenic avian.
