A tape 2 is driven stepwise by a vibratory reed 5 which intermittently deflects the tape from the shortest path between two supports 3. The sequence of energizations of electromagnets 7, 10 which operate the reed 5 and two brakes 8 is controlled by timing means TM so that the tape may be fed in either direction or held stationary, tension being applied to the tape from reels at either end.
