Prodn. of CO and H2 from their mixt. with CH4 involves (a) cooling the gas mixt. to effect partial condensation; (b) separating the condensed portion from the uncondensed portion contg. mainly H2; (c) passing the condensed portion to a stripping column (7) to produce a gaseous H2 fraction at the column head and a CO- and CH4-contg. liq. fraction at the column sump; (d) distilling the liq. fraction in a purification column (9) to produce pure CO at the column head and CH4 at the column sump; and (e) providing part of the sepn. energy by means of a refrigeration circuit employing an autonomous refrigerating fluid.
