A motion estimator for a video encoder selects a search window for locating an area in a reference picture similar to a macroblock in a source picture. The chosen shape and area of the search window may be varied from macroblock to macroblock. The shape and area may be chosen, for example, dependent on a predetermined type of motion in the video stream to be processed, on pre-processor analysis or on a position of a picture relative to reference pictures in a Group of Pictures. The search window may have the shape of a rectangle, oval, octagon, cruciform or celtic cross. |
