Base fabric is drawn stepwise by feeding rolls over a plate having at its trailing edge fingers between which needles 10. carried by a horizontal bar 8, descend to co-operate with loopers (22). The main shaft 4 is connected by a chain 40 to the input shaft 34 of a gear box 32, the output shaft 44 of which carries a disc 46 having a cam groove 48 co-operating with a roller 50 on an arm 52 rigid with a rock shaft 54. An arm 56, rigid with shaft 54. is connected adjustably by a link 58 to an arm 64 rigid with a rock shaft 66. An arm 76 rigid with shaft 66 carries a roller 78 disposed between flanges 72, 74 on an elongated roller 26 having radial pins 28 which engage the upper surface of the base fabric. The latter passes, after tuft insertion, under a presser roller (112) formed with flanges embracing a roller (120) on an arm (122) rigid with shaft 66. On operation of the machine, rollers 26 and (112) are moved transversely after each tuft insertion to shift the base fabric transversely by a corresponding distance greater than half the distance between adjacent needles. The distance may be between ¢ and 1¢ times said distance, but is preferably from ¥ to 1“ times said distance. The tufting shown in Fig. 4 is produced by moving the base fabric one step alternately in each direction. The tufting shown in Fig. 6 is produced by moving the base fabric alternately three steps in each direction. The specification illustrates various kinds of fabric produced by the machine. |
