Controlled change in operating parameters prolongs the retention time (RT) of hot combustion gases in a combustion chamber (14). This RT is standardized at a time period for a combustion cycle and increased by shifting a combustion center of gravity (CCOG) so that the shifted CCOG lies in front of a CCOG, at which an internal combustion engine's torque resulting from combustion is at maximum. An Independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine (ICE) by using a cooling substance to absorb part of energy released in the ICE's combustion chamber during combustion of a specific amount of fuel.
