A fixed roof structure for a cylindrical storage tank comprises a compression ring 20 mounted on the wall 16 of the tank, a central column 18 extending vertically above the level of the ring and flexible roof sheeting extending from said column to the ring in a curvature to shed storm water therefrom. The sheeting is formed from metal plates 29, 33 which are of decreasing thickness outwardly from the column 18 and are welded together and to the members 18, 20. In a method of erecting such a tank the central column is first positioned by guys having turnbuckle adjustment means and the crown of the column is secured to the ring by radially-disposed, flexible tension rods or cables for supporting the roof plates prior to welding, the tension rods being then removed.
