The underlying invention generally relates to the field of mobile computing and/or communication in a heterogeneous network environment with distributed multimedia applications and technologies for high-speed data transfer. More specifically, the invention is directed to the field of Quality-of-Service (QoS) management for adaptive real-time (RT) services running on mobile terminals (102b) supporting access technologies for dynamic wire-bound and wireless networks (106a+b) based on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), the Internet Protocol (IP), the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), and/or the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), respectively. In particular, it pertains to a method for congestion detection (206) and network management in dynamic communication scenarios targeting to support distributed multimedia applications and services to dynamically adapt to a varying resource availability. According to one embodiment of the underlying invention, each IP, UDP and/or RTP data packet (202a-e) of a transmitted media stream is provided with one time stamp (204a/b) added by a host (102a) serving as a media source and/or a base station (104) serving as a router for the communication link between said host (102a) and the respective mobile terminal (102b) receiving said media stream. Thereby, the mobile terminal (102b) performs a node-to-node congestion detection (206) for the part of said communication path through the connection-less and packet-switched wire-bound datagram network (106a) by calculating the time delay said data packets (202a-e) encounter on said path for getting a qualitative status information of said network (106a). <IMAGE> <IMAGE> |
