PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of controlling two kinds of optional cassette units without greatly increasing the number of conventional signal lines. SOLUTION: The printer forms images from image information and has a plurality of printing medium transfer means and permits at least one of the printing medium transfer means to be removed from the body and other printing medium transfer means to be connected. The printer has a means to send and receive a control signal to and from the printing medium transfer means through a connector, a means to judge the kind of the printing medium transfer means and a means to change the definition of the control signal depending on the kind of the printing medium transfer means.
