PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method of simply carrying out a metallic coating step including a base coating using water paint and a solid coating step using water paint in the same coating line. SOLUTION: In the coating method of top-coating an under coated and middle coated member constituting an automobile body using the coating line of passing successively through a 1st coating booth 14, a drying oven 15 and a 2nd coating booth 16, when the base coating and the clear coating using the water paint are carried out, the member is base-coated in the 1st coating booth 14 and after pre-heated in the drying oven 15, clear coated in the 2nd coating booth 16. On the other hand when the solid coating using the water paint is carried out, the member is solid-coated in the 1st coating booth 14 and after pre-heated in the drying oven 15, only passed through the 2nd coating booth 16.
