This invention provides a solvent and a detergent which can be used as an alternative to flon and halogenated solvents, mineral oil-derived hydrocarbon solvents, and phthalic ester solvents, are excellent in detergency, dissolving properties, safety, and compatibility with environment and, at the same time, has a peculiar ester smell which has been reduced for improving working environment. The solvent contains a compound represented by the following structural formula (1): (1) wherein R<SUP>1</SUP> represents an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R<SUP>2</SUP> represents an alkyl or alkenyl group having 5 to 9 carbon atoms; R<SUP>3</SUP> represents an alkylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms; and n is an integer of 1 to 20. The detergent comprises the above solvent.
