PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable overwriting after making a determination on the compatibility of the overwriting, when updating firmware stored in an image reader. SOLUTION: An image reading/transferring driver program has an operation input interface module incorporated therein for controlling the image reader, and is installed in a host device, together with a firmware maintenance program. The driver program includes a first step for accepting a start command and starting the operation input interface module, a second step for accepting a command to write the firmware in the image reader, a third step for asking the image reader about the firmware's attribute information, and determining if the firmware already stored and the firmware to be written are compatible with each other in terms of overwriting, and a fourth step for transferring the firmware and sending a write command if they are determined to be compatible with each other.
