The present invention provides nanofibers and a process for making the same. The nanofibers are made from composite materials comprised of at least two of SiC, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, BC, BN, AlN, C, TiN, TiC, Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, and ZrO<SUB>2</SUB>, such as SiC+C, SiC+Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, SiC+AlN, SiC+TiN, SiC+TiC, SiC+Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>+TiN, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>+C, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>+Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>+AlN, Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>+TiC, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+C, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+TiN, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+TiC, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+ZrO<SUB>2</SUB>, BN+Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4 </SUB>and BC+Si<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>. The process for making nanofibers comprises the following steps: making a precursor material and spinning nanofibers from the precursor material.
