COLOR IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus that makes image defects less likely to occur regardless of an amount of toner attached and sufficiently ensures the performance of a secondary pre-transfer discharge means for a long time.

SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a means by which a color toner image formed by primarily transferring toner images of different colors formed on a plurality of corresponding image forming bodies is secondarily transferred onto a transfer material and thus an intermediate toner image is formed on the transfer material. The image forming apparatus is provided with the secondary pre-transfer discharging means located downstream of a primary transfer area and upstream of a secondary transfer means and used to discharge the color toner image formed on the intermediate transfer member, the primary transfer area being located the furthest downstream in the direction of the movement of the intermediate transfer member. The secondary pre-transfer means is disposed so as to be movable between an operating position that is close to and opposite to the intermediate transfer member and a retracting position that is apart from the intermediate transfer member. The secondary pre-transfer discharging means is moved to the retracting position when the color toner image formed on the intermediate transfer member is not secondarily transferred.
