PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can stably form a sharp hard copy image while preventing not only scattering by previous transfer but rear end scattering or lateral line scattering caused by rigidity of a transfer material, a secondary transfer angle or the like, when a toner image formed on an endless belt type intermediate transfer body is secondarily transferred onto a transfer material. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, a toner image formed on a belt type intermediate transfer body is transferred onto a transfer material to form an image. The image forming apparatus has an approach guide plate to guide the transfer material to a transfer position of the belt type intermediate transfer body. The approach guide plate has an upper guide plate and a lower guide plate, wherein the upper guide plate is placed as inclined with respect to the carrying direction of the belt type intermediate transfer body and has a sheet member at the top.
