PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulator capable of effectively utilizing light passing through a pixel or reflected thereby and getting along without using a projection lens of a large diameter, and to provide a projector made to be excellent in utilization efficiency of light and made to be compact by using the light modulator. SOLUTION: By appropriately setting a difference of refractive index between microprism arrays 4, 5 and glass substrates 6, 7, shapes of them and a distance between the microprism arrays 4, 5, incident light ILa passing through a region DI is emitted to the outer part as emission light ELa from a region DI' altogether, thereby, the parallelism is maintained and, resultantly, the desired light modulator can be obtained.
