摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treating agent which is suited for a liquid crystal display element equipped with a vertical alignment layer composed of an oblique vapor deposition film of an inorganic oxide, and with which secular stability of alignment, and light fastness of the alignment layer are improved through surface treatment of the alignment layer, and a method for treating the alignment layer. SOLUTION: The method for treating the alignment layer is applied to the liquid crystal display element utilizing the vertical alignment layer composed of the oblique vapor deposition film of the inorganic oxide, and is characterized by having surface hydroxy groups of the oblique vapor deposition film having been subjected to chemical reaction treatment with a liquid crystalline compound.
