The present invention provides a process to prepare a pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate derivative via the reaction of a dailkyl alkoxy(or alkylthio)oxalacetate with an appropriately substituted acrolein compound in the presence of an ammonia source and a solvent. The present invention also provides useful intermediate compounds of formula IV.
