A solid polymer type fuel cell, which has a solid polymer electrolyte membra ne (107), catalyst layers (111, 113) arranged on both sides of the solid polyme r electrolyte membrane (107), gas diffusion layers (112, 114) arranged on the outside of the catalyst layers (111, 113), separators (103,104)arranged on t he outside of the gas diffusion layers (112, 114), wherein the cathode side catalyst layer (113) comprises a carbon carrier (117) comprising a carbon having an average lattice interplanar spacing [d002] of the plane [002] of 0.343 nm to 0.358 nm, as calculated from the X-ray analysis, a size (Lc) of a crystallite of 3 to 10 nm and a specific surface area of 200 to 300 m2/g, catalyst particles (115) comprising platinum carried on the carbon carrier (117), and an electrolyte (116). The above solid polymer type fuel cell is free from the corrosion or deterioration of the carbon carrier of the cathod e catalyst layer in the time of the start or stop of a fuel cell, which result s in a stable high output for a long period of time. |
