<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a material showing better power generation characteristics, when using high-concentration methanol as fuel, in an aromatic hydrocarbon based proton exchange membrane generally showing high performance as to methanol blocking properties. <P>SOLUTION: This proton exchange membrane is an aromatic hydrocarbon polymer based proton exchange membrane, having ion exchange capacity in the range of 0.7 to 1.3 meq/g.
