PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high brightness of an optical unit and a liquid crystal display in a single plate scroll type optical system. SOLUTION: A color separation element is composed of a rod lens which separates white light and a dichroic prism which separates the white light into red, green and blue, and the light from a light pipe is guided to the opening part of the rod lens and one opening part of the dichroic prism.
