PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining the degree of maturation of a melon for determining the degree of maturation by measuring the outer periphery of the melon that decreases following supplementary ripening, and also to provide a measuring device of the outer periphery of fruit and vegetables that measures a decrease in the outer periphery of the fruit and vegetables according to the degree of penetration of a wedge-like gauge by fitting a belt to the outer-periphery surface of the equatorial part of the fruit and vegetables and fittingly inserting the wedge-like gauge into the gap between the belt and the outer-periphery surface of the fruit and vegetables. SOLUTION: When a decrease value from the installation of a belt to eating time at the outer periphery of a melon is made clear in advance, a consumer can numerically judge the degree of maturation of the melon by comparing the measured decrease value with the eating time value. Since the degree of maturation of the melon is determined accurately while the storage conditions of the melon after having been delivered to the consumer is being reflected, namely according to the supplementary ripening conditions of circulation and consumption stages, the consumer can always and accurately judge constant eating time without being affected by the individual difference of each melon and temperature conditions in the circulation and consumption stages.
