PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified polyvinyl alcohol composite resin capable of forming coating film of high water resistance, especially moist heat resistance. SOLUTION: The modified polyvinyl alcohol composite resin is obtained by dissolving a low-saponification degree polyvinyl alcohol in a hydrophobic solvent and carrying out a radical polymerization of a radical-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a polymerization initiator. This modified polyvinyl alcohol composite resin has such a structure that the polymeric portion formed from the radical-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer is grafted to the polyvinyl alcohol.
