PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum type washing machine with a cloth quantity detecting means for accurately detecting the quantity of the laundry. SOLUTION: The opening/closing of a door body 9 is detected, and after the laundry is taken out of a rotary drum 2 rotated/driven around the horizontal or inclined axis, a first prescribed value is subtracted from the value of the position of a water tub 3 detected by a position sensor 24 to be the value of the reference position of the water tub having no laundry inside. When the washing is started, the value of the reference position of the water tub 3 with no laundry inside is compared with the value detected by the position sensor 24 after the rotary drum 2 is rotated/driven to detect the quantity of the laundry. Accordingly, even if the position of the water tub having no laundry inside is varied according to a condition for setting or because of the time deterioration, etc., the position of the water tub having no landry inside can be set whenever the position is varied, and therefore, the quantity of the laundry can be accurately detected.
